On this date (Sept. 16th) in 1964, the pop music show "Shindig!'' premiered on ABC-TV. According to TvParty.com, Shindig! was the first of its kind - "a prime-time rock music show that featured live (at least not lip-synced to records) performances by the top acts of the early Sixties."
In honor of its premiere 44 years ago tonight, this week's YouTube clip comes from Shindig! And to further celebrate the anniversary, the clip is the Byrd's live performance from September 16th, 1965 - one year after the show's first broadcast.
Never heard of that show. Do you know what other bands performed on it? Stones, Beatles, Elvis, James Brown, Tiny Tim?
ReplyDeleteJust curious.

ReplyDeleteThe Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, all performed. As did the Beach Boys, Jerry Lee Lewis, and a long list of others (including Don Ho). The show only lasted a year and a half though.
ReplyDeleteThe Flintstones did a parody of Shindig! called Shinrock!
ReplyDeleteThen again, they also shilled cigarettes
Do your research, punk.

ReplyDeleteLead singer looks the best. Roger looks uncool (sorry Roger) with the glasses and I always enjoy seeing a young David Crosby in his poncho. Thanks for this. My husband tells me I was sitting across the table from the creator of Shindig, David Sontag back in April. He seemed like quite an interesting guy. Also enjoyed your mashup in the header. And who knew Fred and Barney and Wilma all smoked. -Beth
ReplyDeleteI totally knew that Barney smoked. He's like a prehistoric Shaggy from Scooby Doo.
