You might get bored

I watched It Might Get Loud the other night. You know, this is the rockumentary that features a not so casual meeting of guitarists Jimmy Page, David Evans (The Edge), and Jack White.

The actual meeting of these three is rather awkward as they sit around and talk about guitars and try to play each others tunes. Nothing like watching professional musicians who have no real love for one another squint at each other's fretboard trying to figure out how the song goes. It's kind of annoying, actually. But the rest of the film was pretty decent. I liked the historical footage of Page when he was 15 and featured on British television. And watching White make a guitar out of coke bottle, a hunk of wood, and a wire was equally enjoyable.

Having grown up on U2, I especially appreciated the footage of "Street Mission" that was offered. I had never heard of this song, and definitely never saw this footage before. According to the movie credits, this song was written by U2 before they were U2. They were called "The Hype" back then. I just wish Larry Mullen Jr. would stop giving me the eyes at minute 1:50. He's so flirty.

Concert Preview: La Snacks at the Velvet Lounge

Austin comes to DC as my good friends La Snacks take over the Velvet Lounge on Saturday night. Opening for La Snacks are another Austin band, Transmography, along with two local bands: Typefighter and Ionosphere Club. A solid lineup for what promises to be a great night of music.

Ls Snacks have a raw, fuzzy, slacker sound that recalls the best indie rock of the '90s. Couple that with highly amusing lyrics and a great live show and you have a winning formula. Be sure to check them out. Here's my favorite song by La Snacks, "Kristen Was A Meteorologist":

Beatles For Sale

We've been getting the Financial Times at work these past few weeks (for free). I don't really read, but I like to look at the pictures. So when I got to the Companies & Markets section, I paused when I saw a photo of a George and Ringo looking hazily toward the camera. Apparently, EMI is putting the Abbey Road studios up for sale. Times are tough. I've got $2k coming back from my tax return that I can chip in. Anyone else?

The Knack's Doug Fieger died of lung cancer this weekend. He was 57.

I can't say that I was a big fan or really know any of their other tunes, but "My Sharona" is obviously a classic. This clip shows how excited everyone was in Carnegie Hall to finally hear the one song that they knew.

If you were lucky/smart enough to snatch up Delta Spirit tickets for their DC9 shows next week, then you're also lucky enough to be seeing California's The Willowz while you're at it. The clip below is off of their 2007 album, Chautauqua (which is this cool little place in Boulder, CO).

Who didn't see this coming?

First time Emma Peel and I ever met up for a show we saw Monotonix. You may recall my cleverly titled post, "Jews Gone Wild."

Well, Emma Peel informs me via Pitchfork that at their January 27 show in West Palm Beach, FLA, Monotonix singer Ami Shalev broke his leg. You can see the aftermath of them asking for a doctor via YouTube.

Scorpions not already retired

News came out on Sunday that German rockers, The Scorpions were calling it quits. But not before they release a new/last album, Sting in the Tail, in March, and not before they go on a cash-in farewell world tour. Most of us at DCRC weren't aware that the Scorpion were actually still together. Even more amazing is that they've been around since 1965.

The more I read about bands on wikipedia, the more obvious This Is Spinal Tap becomes. The Scorpions at one time were two different bands. There was the Scorpions and there was another band called Dawn Road. After Michael Schenker left the Scorpions in 1973 to join UFO, the Scorpions broke up with members drifting over to Dawn Road. But Dawn Road had enough ex-Scorpions and a lame name to compel them to adopt the Scorpions moniker - eventually bringing Michael Schenker back after his drinking got him booted out of UFO in 1979. While we're at it, did you know that Don Dokken (of Dokken...fame) filled in on vocals during recording of the Scorpion's 1981 album, Blackout? Klaus Meine was recovering from throat surgery at the time. Fascinating, no?
