Jai guru deva om

It's Tuesday.....

I'm trying to come to come terms with Across the Universe, the movie musical that draws its characters from the Beatles catalog - Jude, Max, Sadie, Prudence, Jojo, Lucy - you get the idea.

If you haven't seen it, it uses a similar device as Forest Gump - placing the aforementioned characters in situations from the 1960s - and uses Beatles songs to stitch together a story that depicts the changing political, and cultural landscape of the era.

I saw this flick for the 1st time when I was in Guatemala back in January, and it recently showed up on my phantom inDemand channel on my HDTV. With the exception of the characters Sadie (that actress sucks) and Dr. Robert (Bono is really starting to bug me), I got into the way the Beatles tunes were used when I saw this the 1st time. But when I went back to look at some of the clips online, I wasn't feelin' it. Maybe it was something in the Guatemalan water?

Here's one of the better clips from Youtube.

Come Together - feat. Joe Cocker

I'm secure enough to admit that I'm cool with musicals. Moo Lon Rueszh was pretty wild, the 2001 version, anyway. And I'm a sucker for the Sharks v. Jets. I'm truly undecided about this movie (and this isn't part of my halloween costume, thank you very much).

Someone convince me how I should vote.

honestly, I was curious about this movie too. things I read said it either was pretty good or sucked bad. haven't seen Moulin Rouge but I got nuthin' against musicals.

Best musical is by far The Sound of Music. If you have a movie, just add a few Nazis and suddenly things get interesting.

after watching it one & a half times, i'm not sure how i feel about it.

first viewing was in a theater-- it was something of a date, actually-- with someone who is nuts for the beatles. i laughed, i cried, it made me all mushy.

based on that experience, i bought the dvd. i made it 30-45 mins in, was bothered by the cheesiness of it, and promptly fell asleep.

i'm forcing my mom to watch it, so maybe i'll sit down with her. i'll get back to you with my final verdict.

As for "tell me how I should vote", I guess that means you're an "undecided" and that tells me you shouldn't vote at all! I mean come on man!! It's a choice between life and death.

I actually loved it. Some scenes were over the top -- Benefit of Mr Kite -- but all the songs well approximated and there are dozens and dozens of little in-jokes from Beatles tunes and lore in the visuals. But this opinion should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me...
