"Shall We Play a Game"

Well, since we missed a show this week I thought I would post something to keep the blog chugging along. I actually stole this idea from the 930 Club Forum, but I think it makes for an interesting thread if enough people participate. So, to our numerous readers, I ask you this: What are your 5 favorite songs RIGHT NOW? This is not you favorite songs of all time, but just 5 songs you are enjoying at this moment. Maybe something you would put on an "On-the Go" playlist on your iPod. They can be old or new, it doesn't really matter. Potsy, you are welcome to list any tunes from that deadbeat CD collection of yours. Jumbo, you are free to mention Deerhoof. I will go first:
1. "Skinny Love" by Bon Iver
2. "Dancing On Our Graves" by The Cave Singers
3. "Navy Nurse" by Fiery Furnaces
4. "A Postcard to Nina" by Jens Lekman
5. "Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, and Wives" by Voxtrot
Wasn't that fun.

1. MGMT "Time to Pretend"
2. Weezer "Perfect Situation"
3. Apples In Stereo "Can You Feel It"
4. Soulive "Tuesday Night Squad"
5. Decemberists "Grace Cathedral Hill"

Last five songs I played on my phone. Unifying theme? No idea.

I just put together a new playlist on 2/16 so this is timely. Here's my top 5 right now:

1--Bros, Panda Bear
2--Evident Utensil, Chairlift
3--Birmingham Eccentric, Kelley Stoltz
4--Falling Over, The Whitsundays
5--What's a Girl To Do, Bat For Lashes

All new shit. New to me, anyway.

BTW the guy at Vinyl District does something called "Shuffle Bored", where you list the first five tracks that come up when you set your iPod to shuffle.

No lying allowed. Here's my five...shuffling shuffling shuffling STOP:

1--Let Forever Be, The Chemical Brothers
2--Empire, The Black Angels
3--Ole Black n Blue Eyes, The Fratellis
4--Just Like Me, Paul Revere and The Raiders
5--I Call Your Name, The Beatles

Those Fratellis kind of suck, I'm thinking of purging them.

On the other hand "Just Like Me" is awesome. Check it out, it's on Artyfacts.

I agree, that Paul Revere song is great. I think you got that from me, did you not?
I don't think the Fratellis suck, but that album did not have the staying power I thought it would. For the genre of music I think Arctic Monkeys are a bit better.

Here's my "Shuffle Bored":
1. We Suck Young Blood, Radiohead
2. Colossal, Wolfmother
3. Try Not To Breathe, R.E.M.
4. Isis, Bob Dylan
5. Weird, Menomena

Not a bad selection. Isis is a great song off of "Desire". I actually like the REM song as well.

This is fun.

1. "I'm sorry Huston," Drive-By Truckers

2. "A Pair of Brown Eyes", The Pogues

3. "A Little At a Time," Benjy Ferree

4. "Galway Girl," Steve Earle

5. "Seminole Town," Justin Jones & the Driving Rain.

From the dreaded Ipod Shuffle:

1. "Revelator," Gillian Welch

2. "Corrina," Taj Mahal

3. "O'William, O'Sarah," White Whale (Hey listen to these guys. they're good.

4. "St. Robinson In His Cadillac Dream," Counting Crows

5. "A Meeting By the River," Ry Cooder & V.M. Bhatt

I'm not very cool.

I didn't get the Paul Revere song from you, you egomaniac, that tune has been a staple of my mixes since my NYC days.

I did get Artyfacts from you, and that song is included.

Speaking of Benjy Ferree (above) I want to copy that from you since you talked it up so much and I see The Listenist likes it as well.

To Listenist:
I actually had the Benjy Ferree song "Leaving the Nest" on a previous Top 5 list (from last week). I really like that album a lot. He is opening for Daniel Johnston this Saturday at the Black Cat, but I don't think I want to shell out $20 just to see Ferree.
The Counting Crows did you in on your iPod shuffle mix. I think I got lucky on my first try. I guarantee Shaggy would come up on my mix next time around.

4. Radiohead - "Street Spirit"

aaaand from the shuffle...

The most embarrassing song on my iPod is "The Boy Is Mine," by Brandy & Monica.

I won't take it off, though, I like the song. So sue me.

Another embarrassing song I like is "You Are Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera. Makes me feel guilty about how I mistreated the ugly/nerd girls while growing up.

Shuffle Bored:
"Since U Been Gone" - Kelly Clarkson
"You Do" - Aimee Mann
"Uptight (Everything's Alright)" -Stevie Wonder
"I'd Die for You" - Bon Jovi
"Shelter" - Ray LaMontagne

So glad, as always, to bring a little Kelly Clarkson to DCRC. I do HATE the bad grammar and spelling in the title of that song, though. I have SOME standards.

Can anyone suggest non-traditional, non-cheesy wedding music? None of the "Here Comes the Bride" stuff or the other songs you might hear in a wedding chick-flick.

I love this game!
On the shuffle (barely touching the 21st century):
1. Looking For The Next Big Thing--Warren Zevon
2. Heartbreaker--Led Zeppelin
3. All Through A Life--Rites of Spring
4. Superstition--Stevie Wonder
5. Gideon--My Morning Jacket

Fun fact: best song on my Ipod right now is Rock Star by Nickelback. Lloyd's mom loves it!

Favorite right now:

1. Bon Iver "For Emma, Forever Ago." Yes, I'm on the Bon Wagon.

2. Red House Painters "Between days."

3. Jackson Browne "Somebody's baby"

4. Bob Mould "Miniature Parade"

5. XTC "Earn Enough for Us"

John Foster said...

I am in (come see sad crocodile with Jumbo sometime!)

1. A House "When I First Saw You"
2. The Lodger "Let Her Go"
3. The Mountain Goats "See America Right"
4. Butane Variations "Goldie Hawn"
5. Black Kids "Hit the Heartbrakes"

Shit that XTC is a good call - always hits me just right.

Here is the random... (I will exposed as secretly cheesy but in a cool way with somme LL Cool J or hopelessly obscure in a second - here goes.)

1. The Specials "You're Wondering Now"
2. The Church "Myrrh"
3. Spoon "You Gotta Feel It"
4. New Order "Truth"
5. Sir Mix-A-Lot "Baby Got Back"
(Bonus follow up to "Back" - The Field Mice "This Love is Not Wrong")

Great Specials tune and not my fave Church or Spoon or New Order but decent bands to throw in. I make no apologies about Mix-A-Lot. Its a classic in every sense and always wiggles me bits. That I followed it with a jangly ode to gay love (which was really a veil as it was a song about the songwriter being in love with the woman who ran the record label with her live in boyfriend..."
