The Dirt, excerpt 2

(In honor of National Drugged and Drunk Driving Month, Rock Club will be running random excerpts of the Motley Crue autobiography The Dirt. Read more on our community-oriented campaign here.)

In this excerpt, Nikki Sixx recalls meeting Mick Mars for the first time:

One night, while I was strung out on speed and alcohol, a slouched-over rocker with black hair walked into Magnolia Liquor. He looked like a creepy version of Johnny Thunders, so I asked him if he played music. He nodded that he did.

"What are you into?" I asked.

"The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Jeff Beck," he answered. "What about you?"

I was disappointed that this hunchback, who looked so demented, had such lame, predictable taste. I rattled off the list of cool music I was into--"The Dolls, Aerosmith, MC5, Nugent, Kiss"--and he just looked at me contemptuously. "Oh," he said dryly, "I'm into real players."

"Fuck you, man," I shot back. Pompous little shit.

"No, fuck you," he said, not angrily but firmly and confidently, as if I would soon see the error of my ways.

"Get out of my store, asshole." I pretended like I was going to leap over the counter and kick his Jeff Beck-loving ass.

"If you want to see a real guitar player, come see me tonight. I'm playing down the street."

"Get the fuck out of here. I've got better things to do."
(Nikki Sixx, p 30)

I'm kind of making fun of it, but there's no denying it's a great read.

I was a big fan of the Too Young To Fall In Love video back in the day, whatwith the karate fighting aspects of it. I was a big fan of the band until after Theater of Pain. Then I ratcheted down to "casual fan."

You want to hear about a fan? Ask Sacklunch about his gatefold LP of "Shout At The Devil." I never understood why those guys were so orange in the pictures. That didn't stop us from displaying it prominently in the dorm room.

Hey Rick, wassup man. Long time no hear from. Now I know who left the Chillopek comments.

BTW I just got that, I watched the last hour or so of Lebowski last night. Lebowski was in bed with Maude telling her about his past and he mentioned his stint as a "roadie with Metallica...Speed of Sound tour...bunch of assholes."

My comments are nuanced and subtle, and will continue giving joy to the bloggers on the internets for years to come.

Chillopek rules--especially in his pink polo and umbro shorts. That made me laugh out loud, but not nearly as loud as your classic Amy Winehouse. I still can't hear that "Rehab" song without thinking about the dentist.

Substitute the names of musicians for the names of today's current heartthrobs and their banter sounds realistically like that of teenage girls. Seriously.

I don't know one, single Motley Crue song. What do you all suggest I listen to as their most exemplary?! I am only going to listen to one, so make it good.

It's so educational over here! I am learning so much.

SZ, we will be purchasing you a "Too Fast For Love" CD this weekend and we will listen to it from start to finish. I absolutely wore out that cassette in high school.
